Did you know that Snowflake, Arizona is in fact named after Erastus Snow and William Flake, not because there are large amounts of the white substance that fall from the sky? We mentioned in our summer guide the Snowflake Pioneer Day celebration, a weekend filled with fun activities in honor of those who settled in the west. We wanted to make sure you had the link to the events guide found here.
Included in the events is the "Old-Fashioned-Melodrama" at the High School, the parade Saturday morning at 9:00 with foot races just before at 8:00, Quilt Show at the Academy Building, Arts and Crafts show at Snowflake's Pioneer Park, $5 BBQ on Saturday, Historic Home tour that is $1 per house per person or $12 for a family pass, fireworks (hopefully) and so much more.
There are so many fun things to see and do. It's not too late to plan a quick get-a-way. If you want to make it a day trip, just make sure to leave Mesa by 6:00 AM on Saturday to get there in plenty of time for the parade. Driving to Snowflake from Mesa takes about 2 1/2 hours. Take the Beeline Highway (Highway 87) North to Payson. In Payson turn Right (East) on Highway 260 towards Heber. In Heber turn left on to Highway 277 towards Snowflake.
{This is the Heritage Inn Bed and Breakfast in Snowflake. I hear it's a great place to stay and has been featured in Arizona Highways. Most likely already booked for this weekend.}

My momma lives there. Just south of the Temple. It's definitely an escape from the Valley.
