Wake-Up Wednesday: Lost Dutchman State Park

We live in Mesa. Arizona. Our weather is beautiful, we have awesome hiking trails, lots of fun things to do outdoors, and many ways to stay active right here in sunny Arizona. Wake-up Wednesday is a way to feature all that.

Today's Wake-Up Wednesday pick of the week is Lost Dutchman State Park.  Lost Dutchman is located on the East side of Apache Junction.  Beautiful views and intriguing superstitions make this State Park one that every local should visit.  Trails range from a simple, 1/4 mile nature trail to the intense 5.8 mile hike up to the Flatiron.  There is something for everyone there and entrance is just $7 per vehicle to hike.  There are also special events at the park like guided hikes or Saturday family programs that you can check out on their website.

During Spring Break, we took the family on a sort of mini-campout for one night at Lost Dutchman.  We slept in tents and cooked our food outdoors, but we had bathroom facilities and we only had to drive 20 minutes from home.  We grilled our dinner and played some games with the kids then went to bed in our tents.  In the morning we at some breakfast, went on a short hike with the kids and drove back home.  It's the perfect campout for someone who wants to camp "mildly," for a family like ours with young kids, or anyone who is into camping and hiking and being outdoors.  Camping costs $15 a night and sites are open on a first-come basis, so I would suggest calling ahead the day of your visit to double check and make sure they have plenty of room.  Open fires are not allowed, though each campsite has a charcoal grill BBQ and a picnic table you can use.

If you want to seize some of the last days to enjoy the nice weather before the summer gets here, here is one place you might want to check out.  If any of you have been I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Also, make sure to check our facebook page for a couple of free events this weekend that didn't make it on the blog.

Glad to help! Usery Park is another spot. I haven't camped there, but I think for a little more money you get a couple more amenities. Have fun! ~Marily
