Saturday Spotlight: Casa Grande Ruins

Saturday Spotlight gives you an idea for some last-minute fun on Saturday or any other day. We will spotlight a different place to visit in Mesa or its surrounding neigborhoods.

To kick of National Park Week today's Saturday Spotlight is the Casa Grande Ruins in Coolidge, AZ.  Casa Grande Ruins are about an hour or so outside of Mesa.  During National Park week (from today through April 25th) you can enjoy entrance to Casa Grande for free.  Here are a few things I learned about Casa Grande from the National Parks' website:
  • Casa Grande was built by the Hohokams, perhaps around 1350 A.D.
  • Casa Grande Ruins is the first archeological site to be preserved by the federal government
  • It is one of the largest prehistoric structures ever built in North America
  • Archeologists say its purpose remains a mystery
To find out more about a little trip to Casa Grande check out the National Parks Service website
