National Public Gardens Day and Upcoming Local Runs

Mark your calendars.  This weekend isn't just Cinco De Mayo or Mother's Day.  It's National Public Gardens Day.  Celebrate by getting in FREE to the Desert Botanical Garden and their butterfly exhibit this Friday, May 6th.  Also, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum is celebrating on Friday with free admission too!

Alright, now lets get you updated on some local runs:

Girls on the Run "is a non-profit prevention program that encourages pre-teen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running." You can participate in the Maricopa County 5K walk/run this Saturday, May 7th, at 9:15 AM at Kiwanis Park: 6111 S. All American Way, Tempe, AZ 85283.  Face painting and other activities.  Read here for more details.  Might be something to look into for your daughter.

And some of you have seen this video floating around the internet.  I watch and cry.  In part because I hope my girls grow up to be teenagers with that much heart.  Spencer Zimmerman and Dayton Hayward, both 14 years old participated in a triathlon last November.  Dayton has cerebral palsy. Spencer was Dayton's legs.

"Spencer is now in the midst of working on his Eagle Scout project and has chosen to coordinate a 5K run in Mesa, called Dayton's Dash. All proceeds raised from the event will be donated to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation."  The 5K and 1 mile fun run or walk will take place Saturday, May 14th at 7:00 AM at the YMCA and A.T. Still parking lot at Recker and Baseline.  Registration is FREE and donations will be accepted on-site or visit any Desert Schools Federal Credit Union and donate to “Dayton’s Dash.”  Information from this Facebook page.
(thanks Nichelle for sending this info our way)
