Helping Others

Sometimes we get caught up in our day to day lives that we forget to help those less fortunate than us. I thought I would share an e-mail that was sent to us from the city as a little reminder of something we can do - volunteer or donate:

"Volunteers and donations needed for Project Homeless Connect

The East Valley Project Homeless Connect will take place in the City of Mesa Friday, April 17th from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM at City of Grace Church, 655 E. University Drive. Nonprofit and government agencies will provide services to the homeless such as housing assistance, medical care, obtaining identification cards, etc. Showers, haircuts and lunch will also be provided.

The East Valley Project Homeless Connect is asking for donations of several items, including new bath towels, underwear, socks, sunscreen, backpacks and money to purchase lunch for guests and volunteers.Volunteers are also needed to serve meals, distribute clothing and help the homeless contact the different social service providers at the event.

'The City of Mesa is honored to provide this service, which will be an additional resource to help the homeless in the East Valley,' Mesa Human Services Program Coordinator Lisa Wilson said. 'This volunteer effort began in San Francisco and was successfully duplicated in Tempe and other Valley cities. Mesa is pleased to be able to partner with several different agencies to also offer this program.'

Among the agencies partnering with the City of Mesa for the East Valley Project Homeless Connect are the Arizona Department of Economic Security, Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles, Maricopa Association of Governments, Save the Family Foundation of Arizona, A New Leaf, East Valley Men’s Center, Valley of the Sun United Way, Mesa United Way, Central Christian Church and City of Grace Church.

If you would like to volunteer or donate items for the East Valley Project Homeless Connect, contact Mesa Human Services Program Coordinator Lisa Wilson at (480) 644-5831."
