Leaves for a Rainy Day

Although I think sitting around and listening to and watching the rain is perfectly satisfying, the children may not agree.

Here's a fun idea to stay busy while it's raining out. It is rather simple and uses materials you're likely to have around the house. Grab some scissors, paper and crayons to make these lovelies. It is a fun idea for all ages and who doesn't have a few extra broken crayons lying around that might be otherwise thrown out?
Thanks to Epicurean Style for the picture and posting this fun idea.

Thanksgiving Day Parade

When I think of Fountain Hill I think of 2 things: going to watch my sisters run cross country in high school and of course the fountain, however, now I have a new one to add to the list:

Zoo Lights

image from here

"When the sun goes down and the animals go to sleep, the Phoenix Zoo transforms into one of the largest holiday lighting events in the southwest with 2.5 million lights and more than 400 light sculptures from small stars to life size giraffe, elephants and orangutans."

It's time for Zoo Lights!

Zoo lights start Thanksgiving night, November 27th and run until January 11th, 2009, staying open every night, including holidays.

Zoo lights run each night from 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Tickets range in cost from $6 (for groups of 50 or more) to $9. Make sure to use your Fry's VIP card to get a dollar off. Members are $7 and children 2 and under are FREE. Tickets can be purchased online.

According to the Phoenix Zoo, "The least crowded nights to attend are Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday the first two weeks of December and the first week of January. Weekend attendance increases the 2nd weekend of December. Many people come at 6 p.m., so an alternative would be to arrive around 7:30 or 8 p.m. after the first wave of visitors have left."

***In addition, the website stated that member nights are November 24th, 25th and 26th. I am not a member of the Phoenix Zoo, but does this mean you get to view the lights for no additional charge than what you already paid for your membership? I couldn't find any info on their website, but it's worth a call if you are a member.

Thanksgiving Crafts

I think it's the suppressed 1st grade teacher inside me coming out, but I get excited thinking about all the fun crafts to do with the young ones on Thanksgiving. I search the Internet, I think of things I've done in the past, but I'm always looking for the next cute idea to add a little sparkle and excitement to the holiday. I've found some good websites, but ironically, the best ones I found after they started advertising on our little blog when we started the Thanksgiving tag. I'm not just telling you to check them out because they happen to be part of our advertisements, I'm telling you to check them out because I really found some neat ideas.

Here are some of my favorites:

Finger Stamp Place Cards Turkey Nut Holders, but I may personally substitute little candies or already shelled mixed nuts.Pilgrim Hat Centerpiece. I don't really like the flowers, but I might change it up and fill it with branches or even fill it with the utensils for our feast. Terra-cotta pots cost around a buck, so this really is a cheap and cute idea that can be saved for years to come.Thankful Tree, because really, that's what THANKSgiving is all about. And drumroll for my favorite.....Turkey Pinata. I LOVE making pinatas, I had just never thought of a turkey for Thanksgiving. I have done the paper mache project with my kids, even when my twins were 1. It was a fun project (and messy - so outside is best), but must be done a few days in advance to dry adequately. If you don't mind a cylindrical turkey, use an empty oatmeal tub. I would just cut it down a few inches to be more proportionate to an actual turkey body.
Really, there are so many ideas that I would have never thought of that look like a lot of fun. Try them out - kids or no kids. Add some excitement to your day. Cause really, do you even need kids to enjoy a pinata?

Block Party and Battle of the Bands

Wow, Thanksgiving week is upon us already. It's time to finalize weekend plans. Here is one to add to your list of choices:

Thanksgiving Block Party and Battle of the Bands
Thursday, November 27th from 6:00PM to 10:00 PM

After your feast, head to Tempe for a night of fun, games and fireworks. Enjoy music, inflatables, rides, and food. Best of all, admission is FREE with a canned food donation to benefit St. Mary's Food Bank. Event is the kickoff to the 29th Annual Pros Elite Soccer Tournament Nov. 28-30.

Cranberry Pie

As I mentioned before, we will be posting a few Thanksgiving ideas this week. The recipe below comes from my aunt Debbie and has been a family favorite for Thanksgiving time (as well as any other time of the year we have an excuse to make it.) It's perfect for Arizona because it's frozen. Who doesn't like a frozen treat on a 75* Thanksgiving? And nope, there aren't any pictures. We eat it too fast to take a picture.

Cranberry Pie

1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/3 c. lemon juice
1/2 tsp. vanilla
8 oz. cream cheese
1 can whole cranberry sauce

Mix milk, juice, vanilla, cream cheese in blender. Then add cranberry sauce and mix more. Pour into graham cracker crust. Freeze. Makes two 9" pies. Can also be poured into 9x13 pan to be cut into squares. Enjoy!

Broadway Palm Dinner Theater

I personally am not a fan of celebrating Christmas before Thanksgiving has even arrived. I love Christmas, BUT, I like to slow things down and just enjoy the holiday at hand, to just take some time to reflect on the many things I have to be thankful for. The Christmas decorations can wait, the music can wait, however, many events that are tied to the Christmas season begin or have to be planned before Thursday, November 27th (Thanksgiving) arrives. So bear with us at iheartmesa as we begin to outline Christmas events in the valley.

The Broadway Palm Dinner Theater
located at: 5247 E. Brown Road, Mesa, 85205

is beginning it's Holly Jolly Christmas show
running from November 20th - December 25th

call: 480.325.6700

"IT'S THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR! Join Santa, Mrs. Claus and friends as they celebrate the holidays in Holly Jolly Christmas. This delightful annual treat is the perfect way to get your family into the spirit of the season. Featuring Broadway-style dancing, stunning costumes and the traditional favorites you know and love, this festive revue will warm your heart and dazzle your senses!"

I have not had the opportunity to go to Broadway Palm yet, but I hear it's great. Check it out for yourselves and let us know your opinion.

Nie Nie

Most of you have followed the news of the devastating small plane crash that happened 3 months ago that has since changed the lives of countless people. Today at a church meeting, I sat by the widow of Doug Kinneard. He was a man of great honor and principle that lost his life due to injuries sustained from the accident. As I sat by his wife, I was once again able to draw from her example, her love, and her faith. She is able to smile and be happy despite the difficulty of losing her loving husband, the father of her children, and the grandfather of her soon to be first grandchild. She knows that so many others bear difficult trials and therefore she continues to serve. She has kept in contact with the Nielson family and has such a great love for them. She wants what is best for them.

With this being said, I hope we can be like Doug Kinneard's wife and continue to serve and help those around us despite our own trials and difficult times. The Nielsons still need our help. They will soon be moving to Utah to continue rehab and to be closer to their 4 young children. Let's show them that Mesa, a town they call home, is there to help and support them during this time of numerous changes.
Saturday, November 22nd go to Habit Salon to help out while being pampered. Who doesn't like a little make-over now and again? Go here for more information and to sign up. Also go here for other ways to help.
We hope to see you there!

Turkey Turkey

Once again our readers have drug their feet in sharing their Thanksgiving ideas. I plan to do a few more idea posts this weeks to help you make your Thanksgiving a little more superb this year, but remember, it's not to late if you want to help out by sharing your own ideas. Just click on this handy button to share.

Crystal - I hope you don't mind me posting your wonderful idea.

Yes, that's right. You too can make these cute little turkeys by following step by step instructions here. They're cute, kid and adult friendly and sure to bring a smile to anyone.

Moki's Tonight

FYI - The all you can eat Moki's deal which was outlined in this post is at the Southern/Val Vista location tonight. I called to check on the location and they said they moved it up a week this month, therefore, the festivities were at the Dobson/Baseline location last week. So, if you are planning on going tonight, go to the Southern/Val Vista location for your night of good food and good entertainment. Remember to also check out other activities for the weekend using our handy calendar on the side bar. Enjoy.

Chives

While we may not have our "Restaurants" button up and running, I decided it's time we start our local restaurant reviews. The other day I went to Chives for the first time. It's a little cafe on the grounds of the Stonebridge Manor (East side). Dining is only on the patio, which makes it perfect for 75% of the year here in Mesa.

The menu is very limited (I had a choice of one of four sandwiches or a salad) and currently, all salads and sandwiches on the menu are $5 (which includes tax). I'm not sure how long this promotion is running. You fill out a paper with what you want, pay and then they bring you your food. Just a warning: the menu items listed on Chef's Doug website aren't guaranteed. That just shows what items might be available.

I split a Vanilla Pecan Chicken Salad Sandwich and a House Salad.

The Sandwich was a little on the sweet side, but tasty nonetheless. It was served on focaccia bread that was nice and fresh. The only turn off were the golden raisins. But that's just because I'm not a fan of raisins. Fortunately, everything blended well so I didn't notice them too much.

The House Salad was good, but a little overboard on ingredients. In addition to the greens, I counted ten other items. All good items, but overwhelming when combined. I also didn't realize there would be craisins, black berries and vanilla candied pecans (which I could eat by the fistful), otherwise I might have opted for a more complimenting dressing other than the Ranch I ordered. Next time I go, I'll likely stick with a sandwich and a bag of chips, unless they have other salad options available.

Part of a dining experience is the atmosphere and I really enjoyed being outside in such a peaceful setting. It wasn't terribly busy, but we also weren't the only customers, which tends to make things awkward.

Hours: 11:00 - 1:30
Location: 4000 E. Palm St.
Contact: 480.641.4148

The food was good, the price was right and the atmosphere was relaxing and different than your typical cafe. This is the best picture I got of the surroundings. As you can see, it's nestled near trees and greenery.

Read more about the Cafe and Chef Doug here.

Run for Research: American Liver Foundation

On December 20th, there will be a 5K run and one mile walk in Mesa to help a former 'Mesan' raise money for a charity in order to enter the Boston Marathon. (You have to raise $4,000 for a charity in order to participate in the Boston Marathon). His charity of choice is the American Liver Foundation.

The race begins at 9:00 am and will be at Alta Mesa Park (1920 N. Alta Mesa Dr.). Anyone with a liver is invited to participate. Organized races are grand ideas: benefit charities and our bodies at the same time.

Why are we posting this so far in advance? Two reasons, actually. First, now you don't have the excuse that you don't have time to train and second, registering by December 10th will save you a little $ and ensure you get a fancy shirt.

See all details here.

Original information from here.

Thanks to Kayla for giving us word of this fun event.

DM Photo

If you remember, here at iheartmesa, we love supporting our locals. On Saturday I met with Aaron and Jed of DM Photo, LLC at the MAC for a family photo shoot. Through my time at the shoot and a questionnaire, I was able to get to know this company a little better, and as usual, when we find something good, we like to pass that information on to you.
Aaron, born and raised in Hawaii, and Jed, born and raised in Mesa, met when they were both still single. Now they are both married, have started their families and a little over a year ago, they started DM Photo, LLC. They have a passion for photography and while Jed is "attracted to making people attractive", Aaron enjoys interacting with people and capturing everything from vivid colors to "compelling human emotions". They may have different reasons for enjoying/loving photography, but the results are amazing.

These guys are laid back and easy going, which was especially appreciated when my daughter wouldn't look at the camera and kept running away and when I showed up fifteen minutes late. Everything felt pretty casual, but the pictures still look professional. They laughed when my daughter ran away to play in the dirt and responded by snapping a few pictures. Family pictures are stressful. You want the perfect picture and your kids don't understand. So working with people that are easy going is very important to me.

Something else that stood out about DM Photo, LLC was their use of lighting. I have never seen a photographer use lighting with a digital camera. They said they do it to enhance their pictures and bring out their subject. Lighting is crucial in the quality of a photo and as you can see below, it certainly was utilized wonderfully in the photos.

Meet Aaron (aka husband, father, surfer):
Where did you learn photography? On the street, in books, online, and in my head. Rare is the day that I’m not thinking about how to incorporate a technique I just read about, a new location to shoot, a different way to post process an image, or how I can get my wife to model for me just one more time so I can try out my new lens/background/lighting/whatever.

Hardest part about doing photography? Honestly, there isn’t much I consider to be hard about it. If I had to choose something, I’d say not being able to do more of it. What I need is someone who is ready at the drop of a dime to go out and model for me when I want to try a new technique/lighting setup/location. I once photographed my trash can outside when I couldn’t find an air breathing subject. That was one nicely lit trash can, though. I made trash look good.

Best part about doing photography? Photography opens doors, and you get to experience things that you would never have gotten to, otherwise. For example, we were given VIP passes at Firebird Raceway a few months ago and had a blast photographing some of the racers right alongside the track where most people are never allowed to go. We’re beginning an incredible project in a couple of months that will be an absolutely amazing experience for us both. Unfortunately, that one is hush hush… for now.

Your favorite event and/or location to shoot? For me it’s portrait photography (as opposed to landscapes or inanimate objects). I love people and the emotions they carry. Each face is different and presents a new and exciting possibility. In particular, we really enjoy doing senior pictures.

Best photography blunder/embarrassing moment? That’s right. It’s spit up. How’s that for perfect timing?

Meet Jed (aka husband, soon-to-be father, student):

Where did you learn photography? Mr. Matheson, the other long haired weird guy at Westwood High who took his place (yes the same guy who would start crying when he would talk about how emotional it was to watch the TapDawgs dance (or whatever that all guy tap dance group was named that wore really short cut-off jeans)), and by pressing the big button on the camera.

Greatest inspiration in your photography career? Zac Efron, and the people I shoot.

Hardest part about doing photography? Getting parents to look at the camera when we are getting the kids to smile. Shooting at high Noon. Taking too many exposures.

Best part about doing photography? People we meet, cool pictures we take, and money we make.

Best photography blunder/embarrassing moment? Last week when I asked two sisters if they had partners and they thought I was asking if they were partners.

After getting the photos back (which was actually just a few short hours after the shoot), I realized I probably didn't need the questionnaire. I am a pretty critical person and the only thing I can complain about the pictures are my own personal issues (i.e. hairs that are out of place, a child that can't sit still and lopsided smiles). Not only was the shoot a good experience, but I was highly impressed with the results.

When looking at the pictures, remember that they were all taken outside around five in the evening. Obviously that's the beauty of using lighting equipment even when using a digital camera. I'm sure you'd agree that the pictures speak for themselves. Who needs a write up when you have the proof?

If you're looking for a great photographer (Christmas cards, anyone?) for anything at all (they do everything... families, events, commercial, portraits, etc.), contact Jed or Aaron with DM Photo. See their website to peruse their gallery, obtain pricing information and get contact information.
Keep supporting our locals!

Just Hangin' Fine Arts Festival

TODAY - November 11th, while you're in downtown enjoying the parade, make sure to check out: Just Hangin’ Fine Arts Festival.
The outdoor event will be held today from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM in front of the Multigenerational Center at 247 N. Macdonald St. "The show will feature original fine art and fine crafts including paintings, drawings, jewelry and ceramics by Mesa Art League members. Vendors will also sell prints, gicleés, note cards, magnets, bookmarks and other reproduction art. It’s a great place to find beautiful gifts for the holidays! Additionally, attendees can visit with local authors and peruse their books, and children will be challenged to create in the young artist booth."

Maybe I'll see you downtown. My plan: hit the parade with my sister and her kids, try out the art festival and finish up with Sonic Happy Hour with half priced drinks and slushies from 2-5 pm.

Thanksgiving Tag - Details

Here is the deal: One of the goals in starting this blog was to have a place where ideas about different holiday crafts, recipes, traditions, etc. could be exchanged. In the past we have tried to include a few and have asked for suggestions from our readers. However, some of you have been a little shy about adding your ideas, so here is what we are going to do: We are starting a Thanksgiving/Fall tag. You don't even have to leave the comforts of your own blog in order to post.

Here are the rules:
Rule #1 - Go to your blog. Make a Thanksgiving/Fall idea blog post. This can be anything from budget savvy decorations, family loved recipes, family traditions, crafts...basically anything that makes your Thanksgiving/Fall a little more special. Your name doesn't have to be Martha to participate. These are practical ideas that work for the average person. Example: Maybe you want to make a blog post about the cute pumpkin topiary you made or the yearly Thanksgiving races that your family has at the park where the kids win quarters.

Rule #2 - After writing your post, make sure to include the rules. Copy and paste rules #1, #2, #3, and #4 (or just paraphrase) so your readers know what to do. Then add the lovely birdy button to your post (by copy/pasting the code in that box at the bottom of this post). This will link your readers back to i heart mesa so they can view the web of ideas.

Rule #3 - Go to iheartmesa.blogspot.com to let them know you have participated. Leave a comment with your blog address. iheartmesa will then keep a running list of everyone who has participated. This way, when you click on the lovely little button (made by a lovely graphic designer) you will get a list filled with links to VALUABLE ideas and fun blogs.

Rule #4 - Click on the cute button often to get the latest updates of ideas, to be inspired, and then go and make your Thanksgiving/Fall that much more awesome.

***You don't have to be a Mesa resident to participate, you just have to have one simple idea that preferably works for those living in Arizona. If you have many ideas, great! Make several posts and participate many times.

Now for you hesitant Helens: I've been to many of your blogs. I have been impressed with the amount of talent and ideas that people have right here in the valley. Besides, you all come from a huge variety of backgrounds. Just think about the mass of ideas just waiting to be shared. Plus, it's like free advertising for your blog. Now let the TAGGING begin. GO!

Santa at Bass Pro

Image from here.

Although I've never been myself, I have heard that pictures with Santa at Bass Pro are the best. Apparently there isn't really a line. I believe it, because who would think to take their children to Bass Pro to whisper wishes into Santa's ear? To jump start this event, there will be a preview night Sunday, November 9th. Go enjoy the chance to win one of the Santa's gift card giveaways, get a free 4x6 photo with Santa and enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies.

If you can't make it Sunday, you will miss out on the giveaway and the free treats, but you will still be eligible for a free 4x6 photo during the remaining visits. The schedule is as follows: Monday through Friday from 5-9:00pm, Saturday from 10am - 9:00pm and Sunday from Noon-5pm. For obvious reasons, this event ends December 24th.

Other activities (per the Riverview website): RC Trucks, free Soft Gun Arcade, Red Ryder Laser Arcade, mail letters to Santa, weekend giftwrapping to support local groups, toy drive benefits Mesas La Mesita Family Shelter, and weekend activity tables 12-5pm (begins Nov 15th).

"Just for Kids" - Toddler Cruise
at Usery Mountain Regional Park

Ellsworth, north of McDowel Road.
*November 13th, 19th, and 29th*

Cost: The usual Usery Park fee of $6 per car.

"Our popular 'Toddler Cruise' programs are back for the season! This one-mile hike is designed for parents and grandparents with small children. Along with Ranger B, the kids will howl like coyotes, do the “bobcat crawl” and learn how to hydrate by counting gulps of water on their fingers. We will explore the desert from the comfort of the well-manicured Merkle Trail, designed to be barrier-free and offer universal access. The hard-smooth surface of this trail will accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. After completing the hike, kids will receive a Junior Ranger badge. Please bring water and hats. Families meet at Area 6."

This activity sounds like a lot of fun for those young ones not yet in school. You know your child will love being in the great outdoors and what kid wouldn't love a Junior Ranger badge?
